| The history of the Columbus Dental Society is intertwined with many significant dates in history. In 1896 the Columbus Dental Society was initiated. In that same year the population of Columbus reached 100,000, the largest theater in Columbus was completed - "The Southern," Ohio's governor William McKinley was elected President of the United States and the Royal Society of London had recently conferred a medal on Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen for his discovery of the Roentgen Bay.
On April 27, 1896, a meeting was held in Room 52 of the Board of Trade Building at 30 East Broad Street to organize the Columbus Dental Society. The meeting was attended by Drs. J.B. Beauman, A.O.Ross, Otto Arnold, A.M. Harrison, J.B. Kirk, Clare Smith and C.A. Hawkey. A constitution and bylaws were drafted and Dr. J.B. Beauman was elected as the first president of the Society. The first dues of the Society were set at $1.00 and the members at the regular meetings of the Society presented research papers. The first women were taken into the Society in the autumn of 1903, Drs. Carol McElroy and Gillette Hayden (the first woman dentist in Columbus).
